Hello, I’m David Harper with the BBC News. NATO leaders meet in Brussels today for a summit described by its secretary general as a pivotal moment in its 72-year history. President Biden arrived in Brussels on Sunday, came to highlight his commitment to NATO. Jon Sopel reports. Phase two of Joe Biden’s “America is back” tour has now come to Brussels. He’ll be doing everything he can to distance himself from the disdain and denigration that was regularly on display from his predecessor. At one stage, Mr Trump threatened to withdraw the US from the North Atlantic defense umbrella. This American president wants the focus to be on the threat to global security. His other big concern is Russia.Ahead of his meeting with Vladimir Putin later this week, he’ll say NATO should try to establish a more stable and predictable relationship with Moscow. But that if Russia behaves recklessly, there must be a firm response.

The leaders slightly exceeded their targets of donating 1 billion COVID vaccines to poorer countries over the next year, if funding for future doses is included alongside individual jabs.There was also a commitment to build a framework to prevent and fight future pandemics.The leaders recommitted themselves to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and to eliminate most coal power.

Israel’s new Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has promised to unite a population frayed by 2 years of political stalemate. He succeeds Benjamin Netanyahu, who had been prime minister for 12 years. Yolande Knell has this report. When he first took the podium, Naftali Bennett was heckled with shouts of liar and shame by right-wing and ultra Orthodox Jewish politicians allied to Benjamin Netanyahu. The coalition he leads is an unlikely one that spans the political spectrum from the left to the far-right and includes an Arab-Israeli party. Mr Bennet said he was proud that he was working with others with different views and outlined an agenda heavy on social and economic policies. But this new government will be a fragile one, brought together primarily by the desire to unseat Mr Netanyahu. He remains on trial for corruption, which he denies.
